The Bears on Sunday signed veteran outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu to a two-year contract.

Attaochu, 28, has appeared in 74 games with 23 starts in seven NFL seasons with the Chargers (2014-17), Jets (2018) and Broncos (2019-20), compiling 144 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 31 tackles-for-loss, 42 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles. The 6-3, 252-pounder has also spent time during the offseason with the 49ers (2018) and Chiefs (2019).

Attaochu was selected by the Chargers in the second round of the 2014 draft (50th overall) out of Georgia Tech, where he set a school Chicago Bears Jerseys China record with 31.5 career sacks, including 12.5 as a senior in 2013.

Roster Move: Bears add former Cardinals DL Blackson
Roster Move: Bears ink veteran CB Trufant
Dalton relishes chance to be Bears’ starting QB
Last season Attaochu played in 13 games with five starts for the Broncos, recording 5.0 sacks and 31 tackles, the second most of his career in both categories behind the 6.0 sacks and 55 tackles he registered in 2015 with the Chargers.

Attaochu is the fourth free agent the Bears have added from another team, joining quarterback Andy Dalton (Cowboys), defensive lineman Angelo Blackson (Cardinals) and cornerback Desmond Trufant (Lions).

Talks regarding the Chicago Bears’ top wide receiver are at a stalemate, as Allen Robinson II was given the Franchise Tag, but has yet to Custom Chicago Bears Jerseys sign the tender. No new negotiations are underway on a long-term deal, and free agency for wide receivers is proceeding slowly.

So it’s a different Bears wide receiver getting attention:

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports the Bears are talking with teams about trading receiver Anthony Miller. The Bears’ second-round pick in 2018 is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and maybe teams would be looking for a relatively inexpensive one-year shot. And while Miller has talent and a unique prospect pedigree, inconsistency in his game have brought us to a point where Schefter believes the Memphis product is “likely to be dealt.”

Miller, 26, was the 51st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, with Ryan Pace having traded up from 105 that year to get him (at the price of a 2019 second rounder). Miller has 134 catches, 1,564 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns in 47 career games, but the last time we saw Miller on the field, it was a short-lived cameo, as he was ejected after throwing hands at Saints cornerback Chauncey Gardner-Johnson during the Bears’ playoff loss. That it came mere months after Javon Wims suffered the same fate for the same course of action is equal parts embarrassing and annoying – especially since Bears players were warned before both games about Gardner-Johnson’s in-game shenanigans. It’s possible that incident might’ve been the straw that broke the camel’s back for the talented but mistake-prone Miller.

As for possible trade compensation, I wouldn’t hold my breath expecting a big return. This crop of free agent receivers is deep and talented, as is this draft class. But I suppose it just takes one team in search of a flier on a 2017 All-American receiver to make something happen. Stay tuned…

The Chicago Bears made swift moves in free agency to help keep the depth of the defense alive. All of these signings made a lot of sense, and are considered good signings. Jeremiah Attaochu could be an upgrade from Barkevious Mingo, who had a bigger role than expected last season. Angelo Blackson will essentially replace Custom Chicago Bears Jerseys both Brent Urban and Roy Robertson-Harris.

Of course, they had to bring in someone to bandage the loss of Kyle Fuller, and Desmond Trufant is a name that will do. Still, the Bears spending more on their defensive line in 2021 than in 2020 to upgrade depth is not what this team needed. Yes, they added a quarterback and kept Allen Robinson. Still, Ryan Pace is once again forgetting the offensive line.

Pace saw a disaster strike in the middle of 2020 when his offensive line fell apart and he did not have any depth. Luckily for Pace, he saw a group gel together towards the end of the season.

It is fair to say that on paper they will go into the draft with Charles Leno, Cody Whitehair, Sam Mustipher, James Daniels, and Germain Ifedi as starters. It is fair that they can draft a right tackle as well as depth in the draft. Those five are not awful, and the Bears did win games with a similar combo.

Still, it is also fair to wonder how Pace could see what an injury did to his line last season and not find a way to boost the depth this offseason. In Alex Bars, Arlington Hambright, and Lachavious Simmons they have homegrown talent, but minimal resources invested. It is fine to trust them as depth, but why not bring in more competition?

Pace seems to understand the value of the defensive line. He added Mario Edwards and Brent Urban. He paid Edwards and paid Blackson this offseason to ensure depth was there. However, he looks at this line with an average tackle, a player moving positions again, a UDFA getting his first chances as a center, a guard coming off an injury, and a bust who had four good games down the stretch, and does not see a need to add free agents or veterans with experience.

Re-signing Ifedi is fine. They should have signed another depth tackle for a bit less, and then drafted another tackle on top of that. Their line has been depleted the past few years. If Ifedi gets hurt right now, they are screwed, and even at full strength, he is the weakness. Blackson, Attaochu, and Mario Edwards are great, but the resources should be going to overloading an offensive line room.
