Carter was claimed by the Bears off waivers from the Texans Nov. 18 and appeared in two games, returning one punt for five yards. He was placed on the COVID-19 list Dec. 10. The new roster designation was created this year for players who either test positive for COVID-19 or who have been quarantined after having been in close contact with an infected person.
Carter became the fifth punt returner the Bears have utilized this year. Tarik Cohen suffered a season-ending torn ACL in a Week 3 win over the Falcons. Ted Ginn Jr. was waived after averaging just 4.8 yards on five returns. Dwayne Harris was lost for the season with a triceps injury in a Week 10 loss to the Vikings. Anthony Miller excelled after replacing Harris versus Minnesota, returning two punts for 12 and 32 yards. But the Bears claimed Carter two days later and employed him in that role.

Former second-round selections Zay Jones and Linval Joseph were the two ECU players to remain on the active roster with their teams all season.

Jones now has played four full NFL seasons since being picked No. 37 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s collected 124 receptions for 1,338 yards and 10 touchdowns. His best season came in 2018 with Buffalo when he caught 56 passes for 652 yards and seven scores. He was traded midway through the 2019 season to the Raiders and spent the last year-and-a-half there.
It will be an important offseason for Jones, who will be reaching free agency for the first time in his NFL career. Given the lack of production at times the last two seasons, Jones may have to sign a prove-it, short-term contract on the free agent market. He’s earned a total of $6.78 million over his first four years in the NFL, per spotrac.com.
